Last weekend I took a day trip to the pumpkin patch with some friends. Now, I say THE pumpkin patch but the reality is that every October, thousands of pumpkin patches open across the United States, to accommodate people who want to buy pumpkins for Halloween decorations.

Halloween is a deeply loved American holiday that is observed by most of the US population. It traces its origins to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would dress up in costumes in order to fool and ward off evil spirits. In its modern form, Halloween in America focuses on the tradition of Trick-or-Treating. At dusk, children dress up in costumes and, carrying a bag or sack, walk from house to house in their neighborhood. They knock on doors and say “trick or treat!” when the door is opened. The homeowner then places a piece of candy in the child’s sack. This mimics an ancient ritual of appeasing wandering spirits so they won’t do mischief or harm.

Not every household is interested in “hosting” trick-or-treaters. Households that want to attract trick-or-treaters decorate the fronts of their homes… often, with pumpkins! Hence, the annual tradition of Americans going to the pumpkin patch.
