Have you ever wondered what is the biggest lake in Southeast Asia? No? Well, I’m going to tell you anyway about the Wonderful Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia. Lake Toba was created from a super eruption of Mount Toba more than 70,000 years ago. The lake is so big it looks like an ocean, with an island the size of Singapore in the middle of the lake called Samosir Island.
There are plenty of activities to do in Lake Toba. Hike to the Samosir peak is one of the popular activities to do. When you reach the peak, you can see the 360° view of the vast lake. In addition, there are two museums nearby. The museums hold the history and cultural items of the Batak Ethnicity, a local population in the Lake Toba and Samosir Island areas.
One of the exciting kinds of stuff there is a human-sized wooden doll called Sigale-gale. These dolls are believed to have mystical value. According to the locals, these dolls can dance on their own and sometimes weep. The dolls are usually used for traditional funeral processions. People believed that the doll’s dances would lead the deceased’s spirit into the afterlife. Would you like to see the dances?
