Chinese New Year celebration ended its 15-day celebration on February 5th, 2023. Traditionally, the 15th day is called the Lantern Festival. On this day, Mainland Chinese celebrate the holiday with special activities for adults and children and feast on unique dishes.
Over the years, Chinese Indonesians have developed a unique tradition to mark the end of the Chinese New Year’s celebration. Cap-Go-Meh Festival, meaning 15th-day Festival in the Hakka dialect, is a unique tradition that combines Indonesian and Chinese culture perfectly. Starting in the 19th century, Chinese Indonesians invented a new cuisine called Lontong Cap Go Meh, consisting of log-shaped steamed rice, chicken curry, bamboo shoot stew, spiced potato, and braised egg. Each of the dishes is meant to bring good fortune. Therefore, each Chinese-Indonesian family will gather once more to eat the dish as they celebrate the end of the Chinese New Year.
